Spirited Away cyanotype art
In this section of my cyanotype art gallery, I come to show you a new print I have made of studio ghibli. This time it is the castle of the movie "Spirited Away". A movie that I saw many years ago and that I loved and that years later I have continued seeing again.
Looking for possible images of the movie to create my cyanotype I found several possibilities, in this case I show you the castle, but in addition I made another cyanotype print of a landscape that I will publish in another section of the gallery.
In the above images I show you a little bit of the process, you can see the stencil I used to create this cyanotype and in the image below as I expose it to my UV lamp.
I was doing different tests to see how much time was optimal, almost always I leave my cyanotypes exposed to ultraviolet light about ten minutes, but in this case, since it came out with a very dark blue tone, I left it only 2 minutes, which was more than enough to make it perfect.
First I left the cyanotype emulsion for ten minutes under the ultraviolet light, although it was very good, it was too dark for my taste, sometimes when the blue tone is very dark, some details are lost, in this case, the sky and the castle had a very similar tone and there was not much difference.
The next thing I did was to paint with very little amount of cyanotype emulsion on the paper, but it is something very complicated to do, and it did not come out well. In the end, I thought that the easiest way to do it would be to leave less exposure time, and so I did, I took one of my watercolor papers from my cyanotype kit for it, and I only left it exposed to the ultraviolet light for two minutes.
It seems very little time, but my light is very powerful and I place it very close to the paper, so there is no problem, it is more than enough.
Finally, here is a short video showing you the complete process of creating this cyanotype print. If you are interested in my cyanotype kits, or my stencils, take a look at the shop!
